Moratorium Period Explained
Unlike home or personal loans, SBI education loans include a moratorium period — a repayment holiday tied to your academic timeline. No EMI is due during this window.
Moratorium = Course Duration + 12 months
Or 6 months after securing employment — whichever comes first.
Example: 2-year MBA → moratorium lasts up to 3 years (2 + 1). EMI begins only after that.
- Interest during moratorium: Accrues from the date of first disbursement. EMI payments are not required, but interest is not waived.
- Capitalisation: If you do not pay the accruing interest during the moratorium, SBI adds it to your principal. This increases your outstanding balance — and your post-moratorium EMI.
- Recommended strategy: Pay the simple interest during the moratorium if your finances allow. It prevents capitalisation and significantly reduces your total repayment over the loan life.
- Calculator tip: To model your post-moratorium EMI accurately, enter the outstanding principal after the moratorium (original disbursement + any capitalised interest) in the calculator above.
