Urdu converter: read and write Urdu without the script

Urdu and Hindi share most everyday words but use different scripts. If you can't read Nastaliq, our converters rewrite Urdu in Devanagari or English letters; if you can't type Urdu, write it in Roman letters and get proper Urdu script back. Word documents keep their layout, and converted Urdu paragraphs switch to left-to-right automatically.

Urdu, Hindi and Roman Urdu — the same words, three scripts

These tools change the script (lipi), not the language — they are not translators. That is exactly what you need when you understand spoken Urdu but can't read the letters: a letter from a relative, a court or property document, a nikahnama, a news clipping, or ghazals and shayari. If you need the meaning of a difficult Persian or Arabic word, a dictionary or a translator is still the right tool.

Good results, every time

• Urdu usually leaves out short vowels, so common words come from a built-in word list; rare names may need a small fix.
• Text with zer, zabar and pesh marks converts more exactly.
• For Word files, save old .doc files as .docx first; tables, bold and headers are kept.
